Lion President Dr. Nico Dekkers 2011 - 2012 My name is Dr Nico Dekkers and I have lived in Teulada, since 2003. After a couple of years I joined the Lions and now it is my privilege to be the president of the Lions Club Teulada – Moraira, for the year 2011-12. Our club was founded in 1994 and from small beginnings has grown to 33 members living in this area. We also have associate members from abroad who spend part of their year in Spain and when they are here they participate in our activities. The Members of Lions Clubs are all willing to give their time and energy to help other people and charitable organizations. For our Club this will be mainly in the Teulada – Moraira and Benitachell areas but not exclusively so. The club meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at El Corregidor Restaurant in Moraira to discuss and take decisions on every aspect of our activities:- raising money, deciding how to spend that money, this according to the greatest needs in the community, and planning our own social activities. In recent years we have managed to raise over € 25,000 annually from our fund raising activities. Of these the most frequent and well-known are the Bookstall in the Moraira market (1st and 3rd Fridays of the month) and the three Summer concerts on the Moraira seafront. But also good money raisers are the Sponsored Walk, Fashion Show, Quiz Night, Ascot Event and Christmas Draw. Also, in close cooperation with the Ayuntamiento we have our concerts in La Senieta, Moraira. And, we are proud to say, every centimo raised in these activities goes to charity. The money we raise must be spent and while some money goes to International Lions projects the vast majority is spent locally in Teulada – Moraira and Benitachell. In the past we have helped with the equipment of the ambulance and the Community bus, we’ve donated medical equipment for local health centers, wheelchairs for MABS and we’ve given support for children’s care homes. However the emphasis now is on “Local people in need”. The Social Services of the Ayuntamiento and CARITAS identify the neediest people in the community and we help them with food, clothing and other things. All these activities are done under the Lions aegis: “WE SERVE”, but in all our activities fun is not forgotten. Nearly all fund raising events provide fun as well:- the concerts, Ascot events, quiz nights. Some activities only aim at fun like the Halloween children’s party. And ultimately the Lions club has a social function; we are a group of friends, with a full social program throughout the year. Please explore our website to find out more about our club.
