Our History The Teulada Moraira Lions Club was chartered on the
9th September 1994 It was the first English speaking Lions Club to be
formed on mainland Spain In its first year it raised the princely sum of 845 pesetas
by holding raffles, selling unwanted items at rastros etc. One of the first beneficiaries of the Lions
generosity was the boy’s disabled school at Denia. Eight bicycles were
acquired, repaired and then delivered to extremely appreciative children. It
was a start of many good deeds by the Club. Original meeting place was Bar Mediterraneo, Teulada
before moving to its new home at Reste Los Leones, Moraira in 2002 Over the years funds have been raised by a number of
means e.g. raffles, selling unwanted items at local Rastros (car boot sales), sponsored walks, jazz concerts and many
more varied events. Most
memorably was a special night to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of
D-Day. An 18 piece “Glenn Miller” style orchestra serenaded the
night away to an audience, including many evacuees, dressed accordingly. All
the proceeds going to the British Legion Poppy Appeal. From its humble beginnings of raising 845 pesetas in
its first year the Club has now raised in excess of €150,000 since
being Chartered. It was instrumental in co-ordinating the collection of more
then €40,000 towards the Tsunami Appeal in 2004/05 In 2004 the Club was delighted to welcome the
Alcalde of Teulada Moraira as an Honorary Member of the Club. As part of its commitment to the growth of Lionism
in Spain, the Teulada Moraira Club has sponsored in recent years the
formation of new Lions Clubs in
:-
Mazzaron
Torrevieja
Jalon & Orba
Calpe & Benissa We
also sponsored the formation of the very first Leos’ Club in Spain,
based at the Lady Elizabeth School in nearby Lliber. In 2008 the first lady member was inducted into the
Club and now Lady Lions represent some 25% of the total membership. We
regularly welcome members and Lions Associates from various countries
including Holland, Finland and Northern Ireland. In October of each year the Club holds its Charter
Night celebrations at The Canor Restaurant to celebrate its birthday. This
key note event is enthusiastically attended by over 150 + Lions, guests and
visitors and the event is also honoured to receive a personal message of
goodwill from H.M. Queen Elizabeth II And so,15 years on, the work continues and the Club
thrives & continues to work hard to uphold the motto of Lions Worldwide: WE SERVE |
